Frequently Asked Questions

The Friends understand that community members may have questions and concerns about different aspects of the dog park, including rules, funding, waste pickup, and more. We’ve put together a list of frequently asked questions and answers for you, which we will continue to build on as we get closer to the ribbon-cutting ceremony. If you have a question that isn’t answered below, please contact us, and we will do our best to address your concern

Will a dog park in York take away dog privileges on the beach?

The new dog park is not a substitute or replacement for the beach. Rather, it’s intended to be an ALTERNATIVE, especially for dogs not trained to be off leash. If you have specific concerns regarding dog privileges on the beach, they should be addressed directly to the Town.

Will my tax money be used for the new dog park?

No. The dog park is a partnership between the nonprofit dog park committee and the Town. The Town will provide a piece of land deemed unbuildable, providing no source of tax revenue. The committee will then build and maintain the park through private donations.

Won’t groups of dogs together in a park always end up in fights?

Research has shown this concern is unfounded. In neighboring Ogunquit, animal control has been called to their park just once in 7 years of operation. York’s park will also have two separate sections so shy or small dogs can have their own area. Rules of behavior will be posted, with the expectation dog owners will follow them or lose access to the park.

Who will pick up after the dogs?

Owners are expected to pick up after their dog(s), as they are in all public places. Disregard for this, and other posted rules, will result in loss of privileges for both owner and dog(s). Bags for pickup will be provided free of charge at the park.  Where the Town of York properties are all Carry-In and Carry-Out, we are unable to provide trash cans at the property at this time.  However, we are working on a plan to have some sort of dog waste collection/recycling program in the future.  The committee found similar amenities at other dog parks with no real issues of non-compliance.

Is there any charge to use the York Dog Park?

No, but donations are welcome. You can donate to help build the park here: DONATE
